okay, i've proven over and over again that i'm a big huge goober geek. now i'm going to solidify that reputation with this story and follow-up.
when i was in 9th grade, i visited the exploratorium in san francisco (with my camp boyfriend mitch b., yeah, we kissed and stuff at the palace of fine arts and at the pier 39 arcade, but that's as far as it went.) i bought a rubik's cube, all the rage back then in the early 80s. i set off on a mission to solve the darned thing. i took it to school with me and spent every spare moment solving it. i was in a race with todd b. to see who could reliably solve it first. well, i won.
eventually i could solve it, given the right conditions, in a little over a minute.
i loved that cube, and solved it repeatedly, every time i saw it, far into my adulthood. it was my greatest party trick. still is, i guess. sadly, that rubik's cube bought oh so long ago, blew up. it was grooved and worn and just couldn't take another twist of the inner axels.
this morning, my mom, cam, and i were at the discovery store at century city and i saw a sparkly new rubik's cube on display. a stack of them even. i raced to the checkout counter with my purchase. as we walked out of the store, cam claimed it as his own. okay, i thought, i'm driving home anyway, can't solve it wilst driving. so, i'd do it at the stoplights.
there's something about that little cube that's addictive.
i still have it... not my best time, but good for these old fat hands... 2 minutes 25 seconds. and that was after practicing about 5 times from mixed to solved.
